Jest to spowodowane tym, że autorzy, zespół Ion Storm (twórcy m.in. Deus Ex 1 i 2) oraz wydawca Eidos Interactive, chcieli, by Thief III zainteresował i spełnił oczekiwania zarówno starych fanów serii jak nowych graczy, którzy nie mieli styczności z żadną odsłoną tego cyklu.
